In the second hour Cheeba dons his smoking jacket and sherlock pipe for a trip through some blissed out jazz and soul as sampled by Mos def. Recorded live while having a good sit down this is a dramatic change for Cheeba, letting the tracks play in in their full glory with some added words of wisdom from Mos Def himself.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (5th February) Cheeba returns with a mix more typical of his live DJ sets. Setting out on some re-edited trip hop from the likes of Depth Charge and Waxfactor leading through to more upbeat dance floor devastation from Diplo, Afrika Bambaataa and Peter Parker. From the Ninja catalogue, The Slew and Scruff jostle for space with King Cannibal and two edits from DJ Food’s recent EPs. Typically layered and cut up this is Cheeba back on a short break from his video adventures.

This was a commissioned mini mix for Smerin’s Anti Social Club. They are an incredible live band and are now working hard on their debut album as well as releasing a single and video. This mix was designed as taster of their material and live vibe showcasing about 8 or 9 of their tracks mixed in with a few live soundbites including the brilliant Dizraeli.

This mix was made to mark the passing of 20 years since Solid Steel first went on air and was first broadcast in January 2009.

This mix was created over two days in a kitchen in Devon. Using Minidisk to record, records piled in order out of their sleeves, some serious sticker dropping and some of the fastest record changes ever seen by a toaster and kettle. ‘What The Funk’ isn’t really a funk mix but does get confusing in places so you can imagine the original, uncensored, title.
Sadly, there is currently no tracklist for this one but artists include; Skitz, Aspects, The Flying Pickets, El-P, Mr Scruff, Freestyle Fellowship, Greyboy and James Brown among others.

Track 1) Live Downbeat Mix
This mix was originally part of a 3 track CD which also included a minimix and a track with Blagpuss. This main mix was recorded live at one of the very first apperances for DOP in Bristol way back when.
Coldcut – Pan Optican (Irrisistable Force mix)
Amon Tobin – New York Editor
Avalanches – Frontier Psychiatrist
Jurassic 5 – Swing Set
Peanut Butter Wolf – Tale of Five Cities (inst.)
Mr Dibbs – Table noise beat
DJ Rectangle – battle breaks (assorted)
Pressure Drop – Alienation (my friend)
Beastie Boys – transitions
Senser – Worth
DJ Food – Strange Fruit
Ruby -
The Police – Bed’s Too Big Without You
Track 2) Cut & Paste (Cheeba’s 5 Minute Needle Breaker)
Recorded live by layering on Minidisk with a pile of battle breaks and a touch of Madonna. Made in Brighton 2001
Track 3) Blagpuss (featuring DJ Cheeba) – Looking Through Rain

Recorded live on 4 turntables in a basement studio in Bristol, this mix was conceived, rehersed and finally done live in just two days. Sanfu has since gone on to be one of Bristol’s most in demand scratch musicians making his mark with Se Fire, Stereo 8 and Leisure Recordings among others. The mix is raw and some of the vinyls were pretty beaten up but this, if anything, was a masterclass in sticker dropping.

DJs (In order of appearance); Cheeba, Meadon, Design & Build, Grandpapayellaman, Cheeba. Recorded live on 4 decks at Bristol’s Lakota, this was part of the annual Unity party celebrating Bristol’s clubbing community with over 25 club nights, 5 rooms and countless DJ and acts.

Outro “People Get Ready, The Robots Are Coming…”
This is the first incarnation of ‘What The Funk?’… as recorded on cassette back in the day. There’s no scratches on it, the cover was drawn in MS paint or something and it highlights how shallow the record collection was in those days. There are a quite a few good tracks on there though, some long drawn out mixes and the beginnings of some sampling skill (note: keith chegwin flexi disk) and it was all done in one take, no layering and certainly no software.
